Eyelash Extensions: Proper care and Tips for Maintaining your Lash Extensions

Updated: May 1, 2022

Lash extensions are a great way to achieve glamorous looks. What’s more, they glam up your face without demanding extra attention. They are convenient and simplify your beauty routines. But how do you clean lash extensions at home?

Clean lash extensions last longer, and importantly prevent eye health issues. However, despite the many advantages, eyelash extensions aren’t easy to clean. The lash line traps all manner of dirt, be it makeup, oil, or dead skin. Dirt pile-up creates an ideal environment for bacteria growth.

You won’t see the dirt in a mirror. Eyelash dirt and dust are invincible without a magnifying glass.

When to Clean Lash Extensions

If you have oily eyelids, you should clean your lash extensions daily. The same applies to individuals who use eye makeup wearers. Clean your lashes twice or three times a week if you don’t have such issues.

Whenever you engage in physical activities like swimming, or gym sessions, you have to clean your lash extensions afterward.

You shouldn’t wet these extensions within 48 hours of their application. These extensions cure with time and become waterproof.

Substances like oil, salt, sweat, and chlorine will damage glue that holds your lash extensions together.

How to Clean Lash Extensions

To clean your Lash Extensions, you will need a couple of items to properly complete the task:

1: A professional grade lash cleanser! At Rebel, we recommend using The Lash Professionals Lash Bath which you can purchase any time at our exclusive studio!

2: A lash cleansing brush! Make sure you have the right one! We sell the Kabuki style lash cleaning brush in studio if you require one or need a replacement!

3: Distilled Water! A lot of people say you can use regular tap water, but we recommend using distilled tap water since it has been purified and has all harsh chemicals and minerals removed from the water. Afterall, you want to make sure you are cleaning with clean, professional level products around the eyes!

4: A Microfiber cloth! Microfiber doesn't shed and absorbs any liquids or residue really well, allowing you to maximize each cleaning!

5: A Pipet Bottle! You can place the distilled water in this and use it to wet the lashes and then rinse as a part of each of your cleaning cycles! Try it...you'll love it!

Prior to Your Appointment

•If you have extremely fair eyelashes we recommend you have them tinted before your eyelash extension appointment

•Please remove any mascara.

•Do not perm or curl your eyelashes before your eyelash extension appointment

•If you wear contact lenses please bring your contact lens case as your lenses will need to be removed. After Your Appointment

•When drying your face do not rub instead blot your face and apply gentle pressure to your closed eyes then allow the extensions to dry naturally. Do not dry with towel or hair dryer.

•Do not perm or curl the extensions using clamp eyelash curlers

•Avoid wearing mascara since this will lessen the life of your extensions

•Do not use eye make-up remover that contains oil products.

•Keep the area around your eyes clean. Do not avoid normal cleaning, just be gentle

•Use cotton swabs to remove make up by working gently around your eyelashes

•Be gentle with your new lashes, do not get them wet for the first 24 hours after application, refrain from touching or rubbing them. The golden rule is: look but don’t touch.

•Avoid swimming, steam rooms, saunas, or extreme heat for 48 hours after application.

•Do not use an eyelash curler on the lash extensions or try to perm or tint them. This will break the bond on the extensions and might damage your natural lashes.

•Avoid rubbing your eyes roughly when cleaning your face and avoid running water directly on your lashes

•Avoid sleeping face down to prevent pressing against your eyelashes.

•Be very careful when removing makeup in the eye area. Gently go over the eye area, sweep up and away from the lash extensions.

•Using mascara on eyelash extensions is not recommended. If you must wear mascara, only use water-based mascara, please do not use waterproof or oil-based mascara as removing this is difficult to do without damaging your natural eyelashes.

•Keep an eyelash comb handy to straighten out any loose, stray lashes. Comb them carefully and very gently only when needed.

•Do not pull on any loose extensions or you risk plucking out your natural eyelashes. Do not attempt to remove the lash extensions yourself; allow the extensions to fall off naturally or schedule an appointment to have them professionally removed.
